IRA-approved gold coins and bars: how to check eligibility
Learn how to check IRA-approved gold coins, gold bars and silver bullion. Confirm the exact issue, specifications and custody requirements before a purchase.
Account suitability comes before appearance. Ask Equity Trust to review the precise product; neither this educational catalog nor a dealer’s description guarantees eligibility.
What does IRA-approved gold mean?
It means a product can fit a precious-metals exception to the IRA collectibles restrictions. It is not an IRS endorsement of a dealer, a price or an investment. The exact coin or bullion specifications and the required custody arrangement matter together.
Check the coin exception or the bullion standard
IRS guidance identifies certain permitted coins, including qualifying U.S. gold and silver coins, and qualifying bullion. American Gold Eagles illustrate why a purity number alone does not describe every permitted coin. For a Gold Buffalo, Maple Leaf or gold bar, obtain the precise issue, fine weight and specifications and ask the custodian to confirm acceptance. A marketing label is not account approval.
Keep collectible coins separate
A historic Morgan dollar or Saint-Gaudens gold coin may have collector value, but age, rarity or a grading holder does not itself qualify it for IRA ownership. The collection below includes both bullion and historic examples so you can recognize the difference. It is not a list of products all accepted for an IRA.
1 oz version · 1 troy oz fine gold · 22-karat alloy
The alloy gives the coin durability while preserving the stated fine gold content. Compare one-ounce and fractional versions by their actual fine weight and premium.
SILVER BULLION
American Silver Eagle
1 troy oz fine silver · .999 fineness
A widely recognized U.S. silver bullion format. Bullion and collector editions can carry different prices; identify the version on the quote.
GOLD BULLION
Canadian Gold Maple Leaf
Standard modern 1 oz · .9999 fine gold
Known for its maple-leaf design and high purity. Confirm the issue, weight, condition, and the custodian’s acceptance of the specific product.
SILVER BULLION
Canadian Silver Maple Leaf
Standard 1 oz · .9999 fine silver
A Canadian one-ounce bullion option. Compare the complete purchase price and current repurchase bid alongside other silver products.
