PHYSICAL SILVER IN RETIREMENT

Silver IRA: eligible bullion, costs, and storage

A precious metals IRA can include qualifying silver as well as gold. Compare the actual silver product and its ownership costs before deciding how to fund the account.

01

What is a silver IRA?

The term describes eligible physical silver held in a self-directed retirement account. It is not a separate tax classification. Your account documents still identify the IRA type and the custodian responsible for administration.

02

IRA-eligible silver coins and bars

Certain coins and qualifying bullion meet exceptions to the collectibles restrictions. Ask the custodian to confirm the specific issue and bar specifications. A historic silver dollar, a proof edition, and a modern bullion coin can have different eligibility and pricing considerations.

  • Record the exact product, fine weight, fineness, and quantity.
  • Ask whether the proposed issue is accepted by your custodian.
  • Request both the total purchase quote and a current resale bid.
03

Compare a silver quote by fine ounces

Use the same product, quantity, and quote time when comparing offers. A lower price per item does not necessarily mean a lower price per ounce. For example, compare twenty one-ounce coins with twenty fine ounces in a bar format before considering premiums, condition, and selling terms. This is a comparison method, not a current price quote.

04

Plan for silver storage and future sales

Ask how the chosen silver format affects storage charges and partial sales. For Delaware Depository, discuss segregated or non-segregated storage through the custodian and confirm which service is offered for the specific products. Record how receipt and holdings will appear on your statements.

05

Choose the account route before ordering

An existing IRA transfer, an eligible plan rollover, and a personal cash purchase are different routes. The first two require retirement-account instructions; a personal purchase uses non-IRA funds. Do not buy silver personally and assume it can later be deposited into the IRA. Start with the account and product approvals.
